Memory is not a stable archive – it transforms. It emerges through movement, through storytelling, through exchange. Some stories remain present, others fade away. They overlap, become fragmented, are sometimes reimagined. Especially in times of global crises, of war and displacement, we must ask ourselves: how do we remember – and what do we choose to forget?

The exhibition Memory in Transition – Artists in Exchange brings together artistic positions from Bosnia and Herzegovina and from Augsburg. The participating artists carry different experiences within them: while some still feel the aftershocks of the 1990s wars in their biographies and everyday lives, others grew up in a Europe that seemed stable. Yet all of them – in personal, poetic, documentary, or abstract ways – explore questions of origin, identity, loss, and transmission.

The works oscillate between individual memory and collective narration, between what is visible and what cannot be said. They show how memory is shaped – through language, objects, gestures – and how fragile that is which we call “history.”

This exhibition is a space for exchange: about cultural imprints, suppressed narratives, and new forms of remembering. It does not aim to conclude, but to open – to perspectives, conversations, and ongoing processes.
